Signs are writings or symbols that point to a certain direction or identify certain rooms inside a building or places outside such as parking signs. They play an important part in making it easier for people to locate the places they are looking for and know the direction they need to take.
Building signs, placed outside and inside the building, perform the all important functions of identification and providing direction. Thus, it would be quite important for the building manager to strategically put the right sign with the right design in the right place.
The first and most important sign a building should have is the signage bearing its name. This is especially true when it is located along city avenues and highly commercial districts where the street and number addresses are hard to find.
Ideally, high rise buildings must have its characteristic name lettering and logo prominently set on the top of the building facing all directions so as to be visible to anyone looking for it. The name and logo sign must be brightly lighted so that it could be clearly seen even on a rainy night.
Another sign identifying the building needs to also be attached on the building ground floor main entrance so as to be easily seen by people walking by it. If there are other companies and business entities inside the building, their characteristic name font and logo signs must be hung on a huge vertical frame with the building name on the topmost portion.
Upon entering the main lobby, the signage bearing the specific directory of the business entities must be easily seen as people enter the building. This is particularly true of medical clinic buildings where the front lobby sign should bear the names of doctors listed under their medical specialties with the corresponding floors and room numbers.
Such functional signage would save a lot of time and energy for the information desk personnel who would not need to answer the queries of every building visitor. The signage should also be not permanent and easily changeable, especially in cases where building lessees move a lot within the building.
The type of plastic signs that could be manipulated to change names and room numbers would be more functional and save a lot on cost entailed if the whole directory sign would be changed or reprinted every time there would be a lessee room transfer or a new building space occupant. Though this type of sign may change from time to time, its aesthetic quality must be maintained so that it would be presentable at all times as a prominent sign in the building’s main lobby.
Signs placed outside and inside the building fulfill purposes beyond just giving direction and identification. The designs also provide a good or not-so-good impression of the building and its occupants, depending of the signage quality. This makes it extremely important to allot a considerable budget on excellent building signage.
